You are my sonshine

No, it is not a typo in the title.

There is no better way to describe M that the very fact that he is my "sonshine".

Every morning, he gives me a huge smile and that kickstarts my day.

My prayer is that I will be the one he wakes up to and fall asleep with.

My son prayed for me (Part 2)

"Dear Jesus, I love Mummy. Pls take the pain pain away from Mummy and Mummy get well already. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen"

Major improvement from the previous prayer. I am so proud of him. In fact he has been praying for me every night even though I told him that by his prayers, I have recovered.

Christmas 2008

We have sort of established a tradition of celebrating Xmas at home with J & M’s cousins, C, D and E. The same goes for this year. As usual, we ordered a variety of food which includes sushi platter, satay, stingray, chilli crab, fried beehoon, otak-otak, sotong balls and sausages. It turns out to be quite a sumptuous feast as it is all our favorite food.

J has been pestering me for the past few days if he could open his presents and when the time arrives, he was very excited and ripped away the paper wrappers while M look on curiously. J got a toddler digital camera and M received a personalized Xmas story CD album from us.

As we celebrate M’s 1st Xmas, I can’t help but recall J’s 1st Xmas. Once again, my heart is filled with gratitude and Xmas is definitely the best time to give thanks to God for the blessings he has given me and in my case, he has given me 2x the blessings. You can’t never have enough of the good stuff.

My son prayed for me

I am suffering from very bad backache. Doc suspect that it might be slip disc.

As I lay down in bed at night telling J abt the pain, I asked if he would like to pray for me. He said "Yes".

This is his prayer:
"Dear Jesus. I love Mummy....mmm....err....arrhhh.....Mummy how to say huh?"

I had a good laugh and ask him to repeat word by word after me.

I am slightly better now and I believe God must have heard his prayer.

Lost without my GPS

K left for the airport last night.

Though we had some major fights during the past few days and I was very upset with him, I can't help but felt a sense of loss and sadness after I turn my back to head home after the taxi left; taking K to the airport.

K has not been travelling for almost a year. In this year, he has been a great help to me with the children. He takes J out for breakfast every weekend thus allowing me to sleep in or spend some time with M. He changes J into his PJ at night. He does the night feeding for M. He takes over from me when J throws his tantrum.

I don't know if he understands why I always seem to have 101 things to do during weekends but when he is around, every family outings seems to pass by so quickly. When he is not eg when he has to work weekends, I wander about and try to fill up the void with aimless activities and time seems to pass by so slowly.

I guess over time, we have merge to become one entity as describe in the Bible.

At the beginning of creation
God created humanity male and female.
For this reason
a man will leave his father and mother
and be united to his wife,
and the two will become one flesh.
So they are no longer two, but one.
Therefore what God has joined together,
let no one separate.

Happy Birthday to Dad

Had a simple dinner celebration at Pu Tien Restaurant in Marina Square. The review in HungryGoWhere.com seem favourable so we decided to give it a try as it has been a long time since I tasted Xin Hua cuisine.

We had the set meal for 6 paxs and since we only have 5 adults, there was a lot to eat.
3 Combination Platter (We can choose from 3 starters)
- Ice Bitter Gourd: Paper thin slice of chilled bitter gourd with honey dip. I love the crunchiness of the vege and the bitter and sweet combination
- Braised Salted Duck: Salty enough to earn the name. The smell of the duck is quite strong but the meat is tender.
- The 3rd starter is not on the menu but was recommended by the waitress. Dunno what it is but it is yummy.
Claypot Fish Soup - The soup is flavourful but there are a lot of bones in the fish so it is a bit tedious to filter thru the meat and the bones.
Bake Lobster with Cheese and Supreme Stock - Large portion of lobster and is very fresh. However, the taste of cheese is not strong. Tasted more like lobster in white sauce. Quite disappointing as they did not make full use of the freshness of the lobster.
Stir-fired yam - I don't like yam so this dish must be good enough to convert a non-believer. It is well-fried and drizzle with a thin coat of sweet sauce. Best eaten hot.
Fried Noodle (Mee Sua) - A birthday celebration is not complete without a dish of mee sua which symbolises longetivity. The mee suan has thoroughly absorb the stock. It has a lot of ingredient like prawns, vege and seaweed. I had 2 helpings of this since J didnt want it.
Bamboo Pith and Mushroom in Supreme Stock - The bamboo pith is crunchy and again it is well flavoured by the stock.
By now, we are filled to the brim but we still have to do the "cut the birthday cake" ceremony which excited J the most as he did not eat his dinner as all due to him snacking the whole day. When the waitress took out the cake, he wanted to go sit beside his grandpa so that he can get to blow out the candles. Since we have no space in our tummy for the cakes, we just cut a slice for J who wanted to eat that.
I think my parents are really happy because some how, our family felt complete. It is every parent's wish to have their daughter marry a good man and I did and now have 2 kids on my own. I think that is the best birthday present I can give to my dad.

Getting older by the day

M is big enough to balance himself on the tricycle. I can't believe 8 months has passed since he arrived in this world.

Every time I look at M, I feel a gush of happiness. Maybe he is the youngest, or it is the baby fats or his curly hair or his lotus root arm? Whatever it is, he makes me happy.

Play time

It is nice to see the 2 bros playing together.

Ouch!

In this week, J fell 2 times in a span of 2 days. Of course there are a few trips here and there but nothing major i.e. no evidence of blood or scratches.

Yesterday while riding the travellator in CWP, he fell and had some scratches on his left knee. Today in the carpark of International Plaza, he fell again and this time, adding scratches to his right knee.

After we got home from CWP, we put some medication onto the scratches which caused a yellow stain on his skin. He demanded us to remove the medication throughout the night. J simply hate to have anything applied on him or anything that will give the impression that he is "dirty" eg stains or even food crumbs. He will demand to be cleaned and I mean DEMAND. This boy has a high threshold for pain but low tolerance for untidiness. Thus when he fell at IP, we have learnt our lesson and did not apply any medication. Otherwise it will be another night of his demand of "Mummy, take out, take out" (take out the stain the medication has caused)

Family Trip 2008 - Taipei

Well, it is not really a family trip as we are missing M. However, due to the hyper-activeness of M, I really have no courage to bring him on the trip for all we know, he will insist on crawling all over the cabin.

Day 1 - 23 Nov
We are booked on SQ876 which departs at 8.30am thus we woke up at 5.30am in order to reach the airport at 7.30am. It was tough waking J up despite several attempts until we had to go cold turkey and drag him out of bed by telling him that the the plane is leaving for Taipei. Only then did he open his eyes widely and hurried to the bathroom for a quick shower.

Onboard, J was kept entertained by the gadgets around him until exhaustion sets in and he slept for about 1.5hours.

Upon arrival in Taipei, we took the Freego airport bus to the hotel. Accommodation was a cheap 3 star hotel costing S$150 per night but it comes with 2 queen bed. The room is nothing to shout about but at least it was clean and near to Ximenting and the metro. After checking in, we went out for a quick bite as it was starting to drizzle. I had a dumpling which was very delicious. It tasted slightly different from the Hk and Spore version as it had a sauce to go with it. We went back for a nap before hitting the Rouhe Night Market.

Not knowing that we can bring the pram to the night market, we carried J throughout as he was not co-operative. There are so many snacks we want to try but due to the light drizzle and a 15kg toddler, we could only quickly go through the market and ate some local snacks (Taiwan sausage, shaved ice with red bean and peanuts, fried chicken). As J was getting grouchy and totally refuse to walk further, we bought more snacks including the famous Pepper Bun (you can’t miss the long queue) and head back to the hotel to pig out.

Day 2 - 24 Oct
Original plan was for a city tour but J seems exhausted, thus we decide to take it easy by going for some light shopping.

We took the metro + shuttle bus to Taipei 101. Not knowing that it was a cold day, we didn't bring thicker clothing thus we could not ascend to the observatory tower. Frankly, there is nothing much to shop in Taipei 101 so we extended our shopping route to the nearby malls. We returned to Taipei 101’s foodcourt for lunch but J had fell asleep and thus missed lunch. He awoke at around 2+ and after a “Happy Meal” at McDonald’s we took the cab back to the hotel. At about 7pm, we left for Shilin Night Market for another night of local snacks.

Day 3 - 25 Oct
Today, we spent the day with Ginnie, her husband JL and W; their son who is 1 mth older than J.

We headed for Wulai and stopped at Wulai Old Street for lunch cooked the aboriginal way. After lunch, we made our way down to the Wawa Valley. Halfway through, there was a roadblock due to construction and we could not proceed any further. However, the 2 boys was fascinated by the helicopter picking up the logs from the valley and fetching it up the mountains.

We headed back towards the Old Street and along the way stopped at a bridge built by the aborigines. We got off the car and took some photos and admired the landscape. W picked some stones and taught J to throw it into the river beneath the bridge. Even somthing as simple as this makes them happy.

When we returned to the natural hot spring in the Old Street, G’s family headed down to soak their feet in the boiling water. When I asked J if he wants to do that too but he replied in a straight face “No, it is hot”. G was impressed with J's sensibility.

Half an hour, we decide to head back to the city and it was almost 6pm. We've not had a decent meal for the past few days (survived on snack food), we found a mediocre Chinese restaurant and had a simple tim sum dinner. J was browsing through the menu and saw a picture of sea cucumber and exclaimed that it is worms and we teased him that we will order a plate of it for him.

We walked around Ximenting area but found the shopping not suitable for us as most of the shops are targeting the teens. As J did not eat much during dinner, we stopped at a road-side stall and made him ate a bowl of dumpling noodles.

Day 4 - 26 Oct
The day of the tour finally arrived. We booked a tour-cab for NT3000/day and it took us to several places. Although it was drizzling, our spirits are not dampen.

Yeliu – We visited the Ocean Park and watched the usual performance by the dolphins and sea lion. The place was very emply thus J got the opportunity to go onstand to be kissed by the sea lion.

He was very brave and stood very still for a few minutes while the picture was taken.

We also had a wonderful seafood lunch at one of the many restaurants along the coast.

JiuFen – After lunch, we went to Jiufen and I really enjoyed this place as it has quaint little houses selling tones of local snacks.

We had an afternoon snacks at a residence café and they even loan us a pair of binoculars so that we can have a good view of the mountainous landscape.

KeeLung – We wanted to do more shopping here but being cosmopolitan shoppers ie shopping in malls, K and I are faze with the myriad of streets shops. We ended up eating while J napped.

After KeeLung, we headed back for the city and had a simple pasta dinner before heading back to the hotel to pack for the next day’s departure.

Day 5 - 27 Oct
Today we are going back home. We slept slightly later and for breakfast, I had another yummy dumpling before the cab picks us up for the airport. Our luggage was a few kg heavier due to the amount of snacks we are bringing home for our family.

At the airport, we took a quick lunch before boarding the plane. This time round, J took a longer nap but he insisted that he sits on my lap and not on his own window seat. When I touched down at the airport, all I want was to rush back to my other son, M and give him a big hug and kiss.

Overall I think the trip was enjoyable but the next trip will be one that has more focus on activities for the kids instead of shopping and eating that J doesn’t really enjoy.

A day of celebrations

There are 2 reason for celebration today - Gretel's wedding and Baby A's 1st month.

J had to be dragged out of his sleep so that we can reach my 1st uncle's house to witness G being married off. G is the youngest daughter of my 1st uncle and whom I considered to be the baby of the family. I was still in primary school when my aunt conceived her and I had the privilege of naming her together with her 2 elder sisters. As all both the sister's name started with G, so we named her "Gretel" after the fairy tale"Hansel and Gretel". I think at that age, we don't even know if "Gretel" was a real name but I am glad we named her that instead of "Goldilocks".

After the wedding, we had to rush to Baby A's 1st month celebration. It was also a good opportunity for J to catch up with E's sons, C and R.

The boys had so much fund playing together that E and I promise to arrange for another playdate for them and very soon, M and A will be able to join in!

Yummy yummy

Gave M his 1st biscuit today. We thought he will just play with it so we just left him to himself in the walker.

Abt 2 minutes later, we checked on him but we can't find the biscuit. We searched all over for it thinking that he has dropped it somewhere and it will invite the roaches if it is not cleaned up. However, we can't find it and when we take a closer look at M, we found some biscuit crumbs on his mouth. Unconvinced that he has eaten the biscuit, we gave him another piece.

We couldn't believe our eyes when he just chomp it down in just a few mouthful!
M is getting 2 dozens of baby biscuits from me for Christmas!

Longkang fishing

"Longkang" means "drain" in Malay. "Longkang fishing" is one of the activities you would have participated in if you have lived in a "kumpung" (village) in the good old days i.e. before high-rise flats came along. Just gather a few friends and go to a nearby longkang and simply start catching the fishes until you hear yr mum yelling for you to go home for dinner.

In modern day Singapore, this experience has to be created and you have to pay S$10 for it. You can catch as many fishes as you like but you can only bring home 5 of it. Welcome to "Bottle Tree Park" - Modern day kumpung.

If you think it is easy to catch these tiny fishes with a small net, you are wrong. It is both frustrating and back-breaking while these tiny creatures escape your every scoup with such ease and grace. In the good old day, you catch with your bare hands. After 45 minutes, I finally managed to reach my quota of 5 fishes for J to bring home. We will return again but the next time, K who is a true-blue kampung boy can go fishing with J (I am just a weekend kumpung girl who visits my grandparents every Sunday in their kumpung house)

I took his hand and followed

My dishes went unwashed today,
I didn't make the bed,
I took his hand and followed
Where his eager footsteps led.

Oh yes, we went adventuring,
My little son and I...
Exploring all the great outdoors
Beneath the summer sky

We waded in a crystal stream,
We wandered through a wood...
My kitchen wasn't swept today
But life was gay and good.

We found a cool, sun-dappled glade
And now my small son knows
How Mother Bunny hides her nest,
Where jack-in-the-pulpit grows.

We watched a robin feed her young,
We climbed a sunlit hill...
Saw cloud-sheep scamper through the sky,
We plucked a daffodil.

That my house was neglected,
That I didn't brush the stairs,
In twenty years, no one on earth
Will know, or even care.

But that I've helped my little boy
To noble manhood grow,
In twenty years, the whole wide world
May look and see and know.

There is no crystal stream or sun-dappled glade in our neighborhood. However, we do have a sun-lit hill and woods aplenty. Also, the public pool is also just 5 minutes away. That is where J's little hand took me today.

Somehow, on every Monday morning, J would seem more resistant towards me having to work. When I walked into my SOHO to start up my notebook, he would drag me out and say “I don’t want Mummy to work” Whenever he says that, I do wish that I don’t have to work and can spend my days playing with him and teaching him basic life skills as well as academically.

On impromptu, I decide to take the boys for a quick swim after lunch. It will be M’s 1st dip into the pool. However, the weather looks threatening. On the way, we passed by a small pathway and mimosa pudica fills the side. I have always been intrigued by this plant as it will close its leaves when touched. I pointed out this plant to J and encourage him to touch it.

When we reach the pool, we jump into it quickly as the dark clouds are coming in. I carried M and dip his toes into the water and submerge him slowly as the water is cold. Soon he is frolicking in the water but I did not let him stay for long as it has gotten quite windy. I send my maid and him off home while J and I stayed for a while more.
When we reached home, it started pouring. I wish we could have stayed a while longer as it is afterall M’s 1st swim. I promise to return on a sunny day.

2nd letter to M

Dear M,

Once again, you are fast asleep in your cot. I just brought you into our room at 11pm after your older brother has fallen asleep.

This is our nightly routine:
After washing up, you will have your milk and fall asleep (but you have not been drinking much these few days; could be due to teething. I hope there is nothing wrong with mummy’s’ milk). After yr bro has fallen asleep, I will go over to the home office to bring you back to your cot in our room.

At 2am, you will wail for your milk. I will make a mad rush to the kitchen to fix up a bottle of formula and rush back to the room before you wake your brother up. But it is too late; he is already stirring and calling out for me. Nowadays, I make your dad do the 1m dash so that I can stay by the both of you.

After your dad returns to the room, I would plonk you onto the pillow so that I can hold the bottle with my left hand while I pat your bro to sleep with my right. If all goes well, you will continue to drink while half asleep and filtering out your bro’s constant demands of “Mummy, pat pat!” If unfortunately you are awoken by it, your Dad would try to pat your bro while I scoop you up in my arms and try to lull you to sleep. However, your Dad is seldom successful in patting yr bro as he does not know the “sweet spot” that the hand should land. However, I would say that your dad is pretty good at lulling you to sleep.

If you did not survive this frenzy, you would be wide awake with a half-consumed bottle of milk. Your dad would then bring you back to the home office to sleep with kaka who will also complete the feeding.

If both your bro and you manage to settle back to sleep, then the next session would begin at 4am when your bro stir and start talking loudly in his sleep. Most of the time, it would be “I don’t like this!” or “I want to go outside!” I would quickly pacify him to sleep by patting him and desperately hoping that he will not wake you up. Again, if we manage to survive this, you get to stay in your room till 6.30am when kaka will bring you back to the home office as your bro will start tossing and whining at 7am till the time he wakes up. Pls pardon him as he has been doing this since he was a baby.

M, I wish that I can be the one whom you go to sleep with and the first one you see when you wake up. I wish to co-bed with you so that you can feel my body warmth. (I know I am going to regret this down the road as it is a hard habit to kick when you grow older). Most importantly, I wish that you will not feel that you are a 2nd class citizen, having to be transported in and out of your room every night and in the morning. You are in no way of lesser importance than your bro except that he arrived 2 yrs earlier than you and we don’t have any spare room to set up your nursery.

If I could, your nursery will be the prettiest in the whole world because it is decorated with love by your parents.

I always ask your bro “You know Mummy loves you, right?” He always answer “Yes”

I can’t wait to ask you the same question and know that I will hear the same reply.

Baby M, you are my special gift from God and I love you so.

xxxooo,
Mummy

No 3?

Many people have been asking/encouraging me to have a 3rd child because I have 2 boys and it would be good to have a girl.

I would have a 3rd one if all of the following conditions are met:
1. I can be a full-time homemaker while retaining my domestic helper - I need my domestic helper because I would rather spend the time with the children rather than over the housework.

2. My intention of having another child is simply for the sake of having another child; regardless of its sex – I still yearn to have a baby girl but that yearning is decreasing in opposite proportion to M’s cuteness. I look at M and I can feel a gush of love overflowing out of me.

3. Quality pre-schools/kindergardens/primary/secondary schools. – I have been searching for a reputable playgroup in my area but none exist in my estate. The better ones are in more centralized location and nearer to town. The primary school enrollment is a night-mare. Unless he goes to his dad’s alma mater which is just an ordinary neighborhood school, otherwise, for J, he is almost at the last phase of the intake. Again, most of such schools are located in the town area or expensive neighborhood.

4. Free education all the way to tertiary level - This takes up the bulk of the cost of raising a child.

5. Cheaper medical cost and insurance – There is a saying in Singapore that it is cheaper to die than to fall ill.

6. Full-time mother gets monetary compensation – Hey, someone has to pay for my manicure and pedicure, right? Now seriously, according to Reuters, a stay-home-mum is worth U$138,095 annually. I don’t mind that in Singapore Dollars. Heck! I even don’t mind that in Ringgit too.

Stay-at-home mother's work worth $138,095 a year
Wed May 2, 2007 3:04pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - If the typical stay-at-home mother in the United States were paid for her work as a housekeeper, cook and psychologist among other roles, she would earn $138,095 a year, according to research released on Wednesday.

This reflected a 3 percent raise from last year's $134,121, according to Salary.com Inc, Waltham, Massachusetts-based compensation experts.

The 10 jobs listed as comprising a mother's work were housekeeper, cook, day care center teacher, laundry machine operator, van driver, facilities manager, janitor, computer operator, chief executive officer and psychologist, it said.

The typical mother puts in a 92-hour work week, it said, working 40 hours at base pay and 52 hours overtime.

A mother who holds full-time job outside the home would earn an additional $85,939 for the work she does at home, Salary.com.

Last year she would have earned $85,876 for her at-home work, it said.

Salary.com compiled the online responses of 26,000 stay-at-home mothers and 14,000 mothers who also work outside the home. __________________________________________________________

Oh what a day(s)!

It is the 1st of October and Children's Day is celebrated in many parts of the world. It is also Hari Raya in Singapore and Independence Day in Hong Kong.

As my helper had the day off, so it is Family Day for the Toh family too. We decide to make an impromptu visit to the new Terminal 3 at the Changi Airport. Somehow, I like going to the airport as it is spacious and has free air-conditioning. It also brings back good memories of overseas trip even if it is for work.

On the way, both J and M fell asleep in the car which is good as they would be fresh when they arrive at the airport.

When we arrived, we headed towards Swensen in time for afternoon tea. As it was Children's Day, J gets a free kids meal but all he wants was french fries. The kind waitress acceded to exchange the kid’s meal for fries instead. He also had a scoop of ice-cream but he was more interested in the fried wanton skin in the salad buffet which came along with the main meal that K and I shared. M just ate off the table and I mean it literally. He sat in the baby chair and sucked the edge of the table. When I was reading the menu, he grabs it from me and sucks the edge too. Halfway through the meal, he decides to drink his milk and fell asleep.

After tea-time, we walked around the viewing gallery but there aren’t many planes. The whole place is quite deserted if not for the students studying there. After so many years, student still like to make the airport their “study room”.

We walked around the departure hall and took some pixs before heading off. On the way to the carpark, M woke up from his nap and started crying loudly. J started comforting him by saying “It’s ok, it’s alright didi. Kor kor is here. Didi don’t cry.” On the journey home, J said to M “Didi, are you tired? Let’s go home, ok?”

For me, I survived the day without my helper and it is great because I get to take care of M myself; feeding him and slinging him close to me. I think we should more “maid-less” days so that we can truly have a family day.

9 + 6 mois

That is how long a pregnancy should last. I am not kidding. The 9 months is when the baby is inside the mum's womb. The 6 months is when the baby is “attached” to the mum via breastfeeding (BF). WHO recommends that baby be exclusively breastfed for a minimum of 6 months.

As of today, I have officially ended my "pregnancy". I have fulfilled the minimum requirement of bfing M. I think I have come a long way and give myself a pat on the shoulder. You will understand my heart beat only if you have BF your baby. Sorry Dads, but you will never be able to comprehend the strong bond a mother develops out of bfing her baby.

The experience of bfing J and M are totally different; just as their characters are totally different.

For J, it was a rocky start as it was the 1st time for me and I had some breast complications. In the 1st month, I was still not producing enough milk so I faced some family pressure to give him formula milk instead and give up bfing. However, I was very determined to fully breastfeed J so I worked very hard to increase my supplement. Every 3 hours, I was either latching him on or expressing the milk. Even at night, I will wake up even at 2 am and 5 am to express. By the 6 weeks, I am able to catch up with J’s demand of 180ml (6oz).

During these 6 weeks, I suffered from engorgement and blocked milk ducts. I visited the lactation consultant several times to treat the block ducts. Every session was filled with tears and pains as the LC firmly massage the blocked lump away. I had to sneak glances at J whom I always bring along to such session in order to draw strength.

By the end of 8 weeks, J and I have worked out the kinks and have established a routine pattern. I vividly recall having letdown the minute I think of him. Every night after washing up, he will definitely latch on to sleep. There was once my helper held him after washing up and he turned to look at my breasts. I swear that was a twinkle in his eyes.

J was a professional sucker by the 3rd month. He refused to drink from the bottle when my 3 months maternity was up and I had to get back to work. It took almost 1 week to coax him to acept it. I would still latch him on whenever times permit and after work. I always look forward to the time spend together when he latches onto my breast. I would stroke his cheeks while he stares intensely at me when suckling away. Recalling that those moments still brings a lump to my throat.

By the 7th month, my milk supply was declining and being more active by then, he is reluctant to stay still for his milk. It was painful to let go of the bf experience but J and I shared this special time for 9 months and 13 days.

As for M, it is a totally different ballgame. When I was pregnant, I was looking forward to beating J’s record of 9 months 13 days.

M was a very strong sucker but was an impatient one too. It took 7 days for my milk to kick in and by then, he was slightly accustomed to the bottle. He also has a stronger temperament and has a preference for one of the breasts. Coupled with disturbances from J whenever I latch M on, I yielded to the bottle much easily because I thought it should be easy to re-latch M when J gets over the jealousy period of having a new brother.

By the time all these disturbances settled down, 2 months has passed and M has started to show a strong preference for the bottle and refuse the breast. I was quite disturbed by it but being 2nd time mother, I know there is more to motherhood than breastfeeding, thus I did request for medication to stop lactation but lack the courage to pop the pills. (I am glad I did not because M has a suspected case of UTI. Thank God it was a wrong diagnose but if it had been true, I would have blamed myself profusely because exclusive bfing for 7 months would help to prevent recurrence of infection).

I had to return to work by the 3rd month, so it might not be a bad idea to just go with the flow and use the bottle so that M does not goes through a transition. Initially, he would still latch onto his favorite breast but by the time he turned 4.5months old, he has even rejected that and would only drink from the bottle. There goes the hope of beating J’s record.

From then onwards, I have been expressing for him and have done so for 1.5 months. It is definitely more troublesome as I need to plan my time around the expressing schedule. When I see other mothers latching on, I would yearn for that intimacy (lump in my throat again), I make up for it by giving him the bottle at night so that I can cuddle him in my arms and watch his angelic face fast asleep (he won’t take the bottle from me if he is awake as he is used to my helper feeding him)

Now that 6 months is up, will I give up? The answer is “no”. I will continue to do it as long as I have milk. Why? Because I am addicted to love.

Half year old

6 months ago, I saw M's face for the 1st time. Even till now, I still remember how warm he felt when I held him in my arms.

6 months on, M is 9kg, has 2 pearlies and is crawling all over the place.

M is the exact opposite of J.
  1. He puts everything into his mouth while J would not even put food into his mouth.
  2. He has curly hair while J's hair is poker-straight.
  3. He is fair but J is tan.
  4. He cries everyday while J hardly even whimper.
  5. He is aggressive while J is mild.

The only thing they have in common is that they look alike and how much I love them.

It's just an introduction, the rest is up to you

Who can forget the infamous tagline the SDU uses many years back in their matchmaking TV ads?

The data shows that in Singapore, for every 1.08 boys at birth, there is only 1 girl. For the age of 0 - 14 years old, there are 353,333 males and 329,005 female. This means that there are more males than females in Singapore. This data is manifested among my circle of friends. Just as an example below:

  • Male - M x 2, Jo x 1, Rach x 1, Em x 1, Doris x 1, Elaine x 2, Irene x 1, Glad x 1, Jas x 1, G x 1, HT x 2. AL x 2 = 16 boys

  • Female - G x 1, Itene x 1, Doris x 1, Rach x 1, Irene x 1, Doris x 1, YN x 1, Denise x 1, HT x 1, AL x 1 = 10 girls.
Whenever there is a "new girl in town", some of us anxious mummy would try to "chop" (reserve) the girl for our boys. Thus when Baby A, she immediately has 3 boys added to her waiting list - J and Elaine's 2 boys, R & C. (M has been reserved by Rach for her girl. No one can resist M's lotus root arm)

In order to have an upperhand over Elaine, I make sure that I visit YN before Elaine get to do so and seal the deal. (Just kidding, Elaine!)

Baby A is a sweetie pie who looks like her dad (But her dad don't look like a sweetie pie leh). J was very nice and gentle towards her and even gamely gave her a peck on the cheek! (He would not even kiss me!) I guess he has scored some brownie points with YN too. Ding ding, round 1, J scores!

If we ever buy The Seaview (my dream house in the same district that YN is living in), we will be even 1 step closer to bringing the trophy home! J, Mummy is rooting for you so give it your best shot ok?

Maybe I watch too much cartoon when I was pregnant?

That is why they look like cartoon characters?

C,D and E grows up

C,D and E are K’s niece and nephews. When K are I first got to know each other, S had just delivered E. I remember when I first met these 3 kiddos, E, who is the youngest was not even 2 yrs old.

I was going through my collection of photos and come across a pix taken of them in 2005 on D’s birthday. You can see that they have grown up except for E who seems to look the same.

C is now a teenager who is a great help to me whenever she visits us. She will play and read to J and attend to him as much as she could. She aspires to be a gynecologist and loves to bicker with K.

D is now 2x of his size! I can’t believe he used to be skinny. He is still the boy whom his mother wishes that he will grow up faster. A few weeks ago, D overslept in the bus when he was on the way home. When S couldn’t contact him, she panic and went hysterical. I think to S, he will be the boy who never grows up despite her desire.

E is the baby of the family till J came along. He is a very assertive and independent child who can conduct himself at a very young age. Whenever J acts up or refuse to behave, my MIL will definitely recall stories of how independent E was when he is J’s age. E would go to the potty by himself and when he is sleepy, he knows how to put the mattress down and take his nap without any assistance.

In a blink of an eye, they will soon be teenagers and S will have a new set of challenges to deal with.

Baby A turns 1....

....thus she is now officially a toddler.

It only seems like yesterday that Tiffany got pregnant with A so it is unbelievable that she had turned 1. The party was held in the function hall of the The Seaview. (This is when I fell in love with my dream home)

The party was in a "Strawberry Shortcake" theme and A was all decked in pink. She looks as sweet as a candy. J was very excited during the cake-cutting as he gets to sing the 'Happy Birthday' song. A's birthday cake was huge and there was 2 cakes as it was Tiff's MIL birthday as well.
Happy Birthday, A!

Hello, give me one more please!

When J was 5 months old, I tried to test his readiness for weaning by giving a few spoons of cereal. Hoever, he refused to open his mouth. Even when he is much older, J is not a child that will put things like toys into his mouth. In fact, when he can start to eat snacks like biscuits, we had to force him to pick it up and put it in his mouth.

In another month's time, M would be ready to start on solid. Thus I am starting to "test" him out too. So what is the result? Check out the video or scroll down to view his request.

Let's play!

It is both fun and funny to watch J play; especially when he mimics the adults.

The other day, he asked me to help him sling BJ using the sarong. Then he took a toy mik bottle and started feeding him the way we do with M. He even burps BJ after the feeding session.

J has a toy kitchen that he got as a present last Christmas. Every day, he will definitely play with it and whip up some delicious food. It could be soup one day and noodles the next. He would play pretend with the cutlery and even make tea for us. One day, my helper asked if it was coffee, tea or milo in the toy cup and his answer was “No, it is cold water.” We had a good laugh over it.

He also like to mimic the helper in the household chores like ironing the clothes and cleaning the house.

It is through play that you can see their world. When playing, there is no right or wrong or it has to be done in a specific manner. It is all in their imagination; which is the best toy ever invented.

J goes to the Dentist

Read from Su's blog that Colgate is having a roadshow in some of the shopping malls. The mall near my place is the last stop. As it is free, it is a good opportunity for J to experience what going to the dentist would be like.

I prepared him for the experience by reminding him of the story of "Topsy and Tim goes to the Dentist". I asked him if he would be afraid of going to the dentist and he say no. Thus, off to the mall we go.

In the 1st station, we were taught the proper method of brushing our teeths, then we went to a dark room to see the plague build-up on the teeth. At the 3rd station, we were reminded of the 3 steps to having strong, healthy teeth - brush and floss twice daily, use the right product (Colgate of course!) and visit the dentis twice a year.

With that reminder firmly in our heads, we head off towards the last station which is the dental checkup.

When J sat on the dentist chair, he opened his mouth for the checkup without being asked to do so as he has seen the pictures of "Topsy and Tim" doing that in the book. The dentist counted that he has 20 teeth.

Ater we left the roadshow, I asked J how he feels and he said "J not scared lah, Mummy."

When Picasso meets Beethoven

A working mum's dilemma is the lack of quality time with her child.

Though I work from home, I don't have the luxury of spending time with them as well as I have to fulfill my work duties.

Thus, I try my best to fill the day with activities for J.

Recently, I started him on painting. We started with finger painting but his fingers gets grubby with the non-toxic paint. Thus I bought him a paintbrush. A few bottles of paint could keep him busy for a good hours.

As for M, until he gets bigger, otherwise he is only gonna sit in his exersaucer and pretend to be Beethoven.

At the end of the day....

....it is all worth it.

Cost of delivering 2 children - $22,432.85*
Cost of Motherhood - Priceless.

Your reward is a huge smile from your little ones.

*That is how MUCH we spent on the 2 boys from the day they are conceived till they are delivered. It does not incl the daily expenses after that.

My Little Man

I absolutely love to dress J in this ensemble. He looks dashing in it.

Took him out shopping last Sunday and he managed to con 2 sweets from the sales ladies in Longchamp @ Paragon. They are charmed by his quiet demeanor and they commented that he looks very "man".

But of course! Mummy is his stylist.

080808

Had a gathering with E, V, W and YN (clockwise from top left) on 08/08/08.

You can find 3 "8"s (三八) in 08/08/08. How ept it is for this gathering of 5 women.

The food was great, the company was delightful, the conversation was intriguing and the laughter was uncontrollable. For the few hours that night, we offloaded our responsibilities as mothers, workers and wives. We were back to just being a girl.

I got to know V when she first joined Intel almost 8 yrs (I think) back. She is one of my clients and the friendship developed from there.

E was on the payroll by the company that I was then working for but she reported to Intel. I vividly remember sharing a cube with her. Talk about 2 in a box!

YN....hmmmm....I don't remember how our friendship started but I remember her from one of the Intel D&D where she wore a silver bareback top and her wild wild hair.

I met W on the rooftop of The Scarlet on V's farewell party when she moved to KL.

Fast forward to 080808, E and I are mothers with 2 boys each. W and YN are mothers-to-be. V is planning to be one next year. It would be interesting to read back on this post a few years down to road to see how our lives have evolved. But one thing is for sure, this friendship is here to stay.

Cheers, sistas!

Outing to the Singapore Science Centre

K had the day off thus I suggested that they spend some together at the Singapore Science Centre.

It has been ages since I visited the Centre thus I am not sure what is being showcase there so I am looking forward to J having an educational trip.

The father and son duo set off at 10+am for the centre. When I called them at 12+, to my surprise, they are already having lunch at McDonalds.

According to K, the only exhibit that interest J are the dinosaurs.

J came back with a dino toy and helicopter. He spend the rest of the day mimicking a dino and chased us around the house; wanting to bite us and making roaring noises.

Maybe the next time I am off from work, I can bring him again and maybe give him a mummy's perspective of the centre. I guess Daddy is just good for the fun stuff like lazing in front of the TV. Hee hee.

Comrade de Motherhood

M was supposed to be circumcised today as he has a constant mild infection on the tip of his penis. Removing the foreskin would reduce the chances of bacteria accumulating and make daily care easier.

After consulting the specialist, he concluded that there is no urgency for his condition and the circumcision is by choice and not by need. K and I was caught in a dilemma whether we should go ahead with it and thus stepped out to the waiting area to talk it through.

I am reluctant to go through the procedure although there are benefits that the circumcision brings. However, the benefit is not significant as compared to the discomfort that M has to go through. I don't think any mother would want to inflict pain onto her child unless it is a life-threatening decision. A single cut on the child is like a 1000 cuts onto the mother.

As I am unable to bring myself to make that decision, I left it to K to make and made the comment that it is impossible for a mother to make such decision. And I made a poor attempt to hold back my tears. Another mother who heard my comment looked at me and nods in agreement. Tears welled up in her eyes too. At that moment, there was this unspoken comrade de motherhood that only mothers would understand. Later I was informed by my helper that the lady has a 2-month son who has to be circumcised as he suffered from a very bad infection. (The mother chatted with my helper when we were in the consultation room)

I walked out of the clinic with a grateful heart that M's condition is insignificant as compared to that little boy.

To that mother, my heart goes out to you and I wish a speedy recovery upon your little one

Project "Tame J's Hair"

J's hair grow very fast; and it grow upwards. Thus it is forever spiky.

After having the crew cut hairstyle for 2 years, we decide to grow his hair long.

J has also become accustom to going to the hair shop and has warm up to the aunty that cuts his hair. Reason being that she will give him a candy after the hair cut. Thus he no longer cry when has to visit the hairdresser.
Look out for updates on this project and see if we will succeed in taming his stubborn hairs.

Kids....they grow up too fast

It only seems like yesterday that J and M are born. In a wink of the eye, J is 2+ yrs old and M turns 4 months today.

We did the "Marie Biscuit" tradition where marie biscuits are hung onto the baby to stop him from salivating. I don't know the exact significant of this tradition but it seems like a fun activity to capture on "film".

M, who is the exact opposite of J in many things, grabbed the biscuits and put it in his mouth. I think (and hope) M would be more interested in food when he grows up as compared to J who "eats to live" and not "live to eat". Just the other day, J commented that durians are smelly thus dashing all my hopes of sharing my love for the king of fruits with him which I wrote abt in my earlier post.

I was reading mum-yum's blog and came across this comic strip that she posted and the content is so befitting of this post.

There was a stage where they do nothing but just eat, sleep, cry and poo. Then one day, they decide to increase their activities by cooing, smiling, salivating and roll over. Once they start to roll over, that's where the trouble begins because that means they already have a mind of their own and is on the way to explore their independence. Try changing theit diaper at this stage and you would know what I mean. When you need them to lay still till you complete the change, they will insist on rolling over to see the world right-side up.

Just the other day, when I asked J to do something (I forgot what it was), he looked at me in the eyes and said....."No". And a few nights ago, he asked for "Starbucks Hot Chocolate". How can "Starbucks" be in the vocabulary of a 2 years old?

The growing years of my children is just speeding by me and I hope to slow it down slightly just to be able to spend more time with them.

M's Extreme Makeover

M reaches his 4th month milestone on 28th Jul and it is usually signified with a haircut. I remembered that it seems forever before J finally had his 4th-mth haircut (his hair constantly tickled my neck whenever I carried him) but for M, time passed by so much quickly.

As both J and M have a significant amount of jet-black hair, it seems like a waste to cut and throw it away. Thus with J, we decide to have the hair made into 胎毛笔 (taimaobi).

The tradition of giving a baby boy a "taimaobi" — fashioned out of his own first growth of hair — dates back to the Tang Dynasty some 2,000 years ago. When the boy goes on to be a scholar, he would use the brush when sitting for the Imperial examinations to be a government official. Only boys were given this gift as only males were allowed to sit for the exam in ancient China. The catch is that only the baby’s first strands of hair can be used to make these brushes. The brush has been widely used by Chinese officials, scholars and students to write, practise calligraphy or paint for thousands of years. Its popularity diminished with the advent of fountain pens and ballpoint pens.

These brushes does not come cheap. However, it is the only physical item that I can preserve for a long time and hand back to them when they grow up to remind them of their roots.
How do you like M's extreme over?

Our look-alike meter

Is J looking more like me? I still think he looks more like his dad and when you factor in his temperament; its like a chip off the block.
